Gunsmithing Services and FAQs...
My primary market is in accurate rifles, predominantly bolt action target rifles. I regularly do work for hunters and range shooters with the majority of work for benchrest, F-class and long range.
How much will it cost?
Please consider the expense and be sure to obtain an estimate or quote before deciding on a course of work. With a lot of sporting rifles the cost of work will not add to the value of the firearm and may not be economical. Unusual cartridges and calibers can incur considerable expense in dies and brass.
What barrel brand?
I prefer to use match grade barrels and try to keep some stock on hand. Australian made Maddco stainless steel barrels are excellent quality and available on reasonable lead times. Chrome Moly match grade barrels are available from a few suppliers but be prepared to wait.
Blueing?
I only blue every few months and will only blue when I have sufficient jobs ready.
How long does it take?
A bit longer every time you ask! As yet I cannot work and talk! As most shooters like to chat and check regularly this seriously detracts from the amount of work completed. The major factor is the availability of components. Please ensure you are aware of possible lead times before making decisions. Lead times of twelve months are not uncommon for many custom parts that need to be imported. I will give my best estimate when you have decided on all variables but the supply of components is the limiting factor.
Can I change my mind?
As often as you like, but, any item ordered, purchased, allocated or manufactured especially for the job needs to be paid for. Every change will likely add to the lead time and cost. Will I get upset about changes, you bet! but I understand circumstances change and I will endeavour to accommodate providing I am not left out of pocket.
Action trueing?
Currently I true Remington actions only, this is due to the tooling system I use that is action specific. I offer varying levels of work and cost and prefer to use replacement bolts if a high level of rework is required. I am prepared to invest in tools for other actions if I feel the cost can be recovered.
Reamers , calibers etc?
I am always adding to my available reamers, please ask for anything you may need. I am happy for customers to purchase or provide their own. I will absorb the cost of a reamer if I think I can use it for four or more jobs.
Recommendations and guidance?
I know what has worked for me in the past and I have seen what has not. Ultimately the decision is yours and we all have our perceptions of what is accurate. I am happy to advise but flexible enough to listen. Most things have been done before but we are not all driven by the same goals. Time and labour costs can add up quickly and whereas you may like to potter and play for hours on end you probably don't want to pay for me to do the same. Small changes may make considerable differences to cost so I will advise where possible to minimize the bill.
Priorities?
Jobs are booked in when they are received and are completed in that order once the components are available. Due to this I can become suddenly backlogged when a shipment of parts arrives. I prefer not to keep firearms here until the job is ready to commence and will contact you once the components are all available.
